Almost all men experience some degree of hair loss in their lifetime. Some men experience senile alopecia which is a gradual thinning hair process which starts at around the middle thirties and progressing slowly up to late in life. The great majority of individuals suffer male pattern baldness a progressive disorder, which causes men to lose hair gradually over the front and top of the head. Fortunately, all men even severely bald men will have permanent concentrated hair in a horseshoe-shaped area at the back and sides of the head. This area is called the donor area. Hair transplantation uses this donor area and relocates the hair with the roots to the thinning or balding area. The actual surgical removal and transplanting of the hair follicles is a simple procedure, what is complex in the art of hair transplantation is the artistic talent required of Dr. Pineda to design and recreate a natural looking hairline that will look appropriate throughout the patient’s lifetime.

Hair loss can be brought about by several factors including severe illness, malnutrition, vitamin deficiency, postpartum pregnancy, and endocrine disturbances to name a few.The most common type of hair loss in both sexes is Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA). Male Pattern balance is its common name. AGA requires three conditions for it to occur, (1) a gene, (2) a hormone, (3) and time.

AGA cannot occur without the presence of a single dominant “hair loss” gene that can be passed to a child from either parent. Thus, any child has a 50% chance of inheriting the trait for baldness if one of the parents carries the gene for baldness. To put it simply, if your father or uncles on either side of the family are bald then you have a greater possibility of going bald yourself.

Hormones are biochemical substances that are made in different glands in the body and are released into the bloodstream to exert their effects throughout the body. Testosterone is the major male sex hormone and this same hormone is responsible for the pubertal changes like change in voice, growth of axillary and pubic hair and is also responsible for the signal to induce baldness in genetically predisposed individuals.

Time is another factor to consider in balding individuals. Baldness develops differently from one individual to another. It has been noted that Caucasians start losing their hair at around 20 years of age and stops at around the ages of 35-40 years old while Asians start losing their hair in the late 20’s or early 30’s and stabilize at around 40-42 years of age.

Baldness involves the state of lacking hair where it often grows, especially on the head. The most common form of baldness is a progressive hair thinning condition called androgenic alopecia or “male pattern baldness” that occurs in adult male humans and other species. The amount and patterns of baldness can vary greatly; it ranges from male and female pattern alopecia (androgenic alopecia, also called androgenetic alopecia or alopecia androgenetica), alopecia areata, which involves the loss of some of the hair from the head, and alopecia totalis, which involves the loss of all head hair, to the most extreme form, alopecia universalis, which involves the loss of all hair from the head and the body.
